ABOUT
Background
It was in 2005 that Daniel Taylor and Donald Taylor conceived the idea of writing a book to recount the histories of the Taylor, Smith and MacDonald families in Mauritius.
The book was written by Donald with the help of Daniel and published in May of 2012, sadly after Donald’s death which occurred in April 2012.
In the Epilogue of ‘They Met in Mauritius’, Donald wrote that a website would be created to continue the story recounted in Volume 1 and where any family members and their descendants who left Mauritius could also share their own stories.
The website ‘theymetinmauritius’ was launched at the end of 2012 and a number of the descendants of the Taylor, Smith and MacDonald families have already contributed some of their stories, as well as a number of photographs which have been uploaded to the website.
Initially the website was frequently visited, and from the contributions made, clearly the families found it interesting. After some 5 years, the interest waned however. It was therefore decided to restructure and relaunch the website to make it more interesting and user friendly.
With the aim of preserving the histories of our 3 families, we want to grow this digital archive and simultaneously make it available to all. We invite you to contribute more of your stories and photographs. While contributions will still have to go through the editor, we have made the process easier and quicker. Simply click on the CONTRIBUTE button at the bottom of this page, or you can get in touch via the main navigation. We would love to hear from you.

From Brae To Westminster
By TIM Taylor AND KEITH ALLAN
This is the story of a house, Brae House. It was built in Floreal, Mauritius in 1936 by George Taylor. In 1966 the house was purchased by the British Government and on the independence of Mauritius in March 1968, it was renamed Westminster house. It has since been the official residence of all the British High Commissioners to Mauritius.
The book is available in PDF format and anyone is free to download it. If you would prefer, you can also order a hard copy, at a cost of Mur 500.
